Can dogs eat green onions?

Scallions (Known as green onions, spring onions, or salad onions) are veggies of the Allium family (garlic, shallot, leek, chive, spring onion and Chinese onion). Scallions have a milder taste than most onions. And are an essential part of our food today.

Onions are consumed in a variety of ways, they can be added to almost any food gravy, because it enhances the aroma of food. Onions and garlic both make our food delicious and tasting good. Can dogs eat green onions is thought to be a simple question because what we know is that they only give bad breath.

If you ask can dogs eat green onions, then NO they can’t. Scallions or green onions are toxic to dogs, cats and horses. Don’t even think about feeding your furry friend any green onions, no matter how bad she wants it.

As we said, what most people know is that onions only give bad breath. But actually they can cause more health issues to your dog than just bad breath. Onions are toxic to canines because of the substance they contain known as thiosulfate. And since dogs do not have the enzyme used to digest this substance, onions become a harmful food for them. This toxic compound also breaks down the red blood cells.

Dog owners think that onions can be given to dogs in some of its forms but it’s absolutely wrong! Onions should be avoided in any forms (Raw or cooked, fried or powdered), because all parts of the onion are toxic to dogs, including the flesh, leaves, juice, and processed powders.

My dog ate green onions, what to do?

If your dog ate small amount of onions or green onions, he should be just fine. At the most your dog may get an upset stomach, diarrhea and maybe a loss of appetite. But he should feel better within a few days. Just make sure he gets no more onions!

Onions are toxic to dogs but only if they have eaten a large amount.
It takes 100 grams of onion (medium onion) per 40 to 45 pounds of a dog’s weight to cause toxic effects.
